Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley said Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is “absolutely not ready to be the president of the United States” if she is not “ready for primetime in terms of handling the press or handling a debate.”
As of Tuesday, Harris has avoided unscripted interactions with the public or sitting down for a formal interview with the media for 37 days straight – which Whatley said is a sign that Harris is “just not ready for primetime.”
“If you ever wanted to see a campaign around a candidate who’s just not ready for primetime, this is your chance. It is unbelievable that [Harris] can’t even stand up for a regular TV interview, a radio interview…Her handlers are just absolutely killing themselves to protect her from herself,” Whatley explained on Tuesday’s episode of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.
Whatley suggested that Harris’ reluctance to sit down for an interview or have unscripted interactions with voters stems from her campaign’s scrambling to decide which issues the vice president should “double down” on or “flip flop” on.
“Her handlers right now are trying to figure out which issues she’s going to double down on, despite the fact that they’re terrible, and which issues is she going to flip flop on. But the fact is, for the last four years in the White House and several years in the Senate before that, she’s held these positions. She’s for open borders. She’s for inflationary spending. She’s for a weak America. She’s the most radical pro-abortion candidate we’ve ever had on a ticket, and now they’re all trying to figure out where they are going to walk back,” Whatley said.
Whatley attributed Harris’ successful dodging of the press to the media, which Whatley said gives the vice president a “glowing press coverage.”
“What we’re seeing right now is just unbelievable. The steps that the media are taking to cover up for her, that they’re giving her this glowing press coverage. They’re letting her go out there, not giving any interviews, not giving any conversations. It’s really amazing that this is not a story, and I think you’re absolutely right. Hidin’ Harris is a great way to put it,” Whatley said.
Looking forward to the November 5 general election, Whatley said the choice between former President Donald Trump and Harris is essentially “right versus wrong” rather than “right versus left.”
“Donald Trump is uniting the country right now. At our convention, what we saw was that he had united the Republican Party like we’ve not seen in generations, decades since we’ve seen the party really coalesced together the way that it did. He then used the opportunity of that entire convention to try and rally the rest of the country,” Whatley explained.
“[The Democrats] will do anything to win, and it is unbelievable that they call themselves the party that’s trying to protect democracy. They’re taking every step that they can against it. So right now, I think every American needs to take a look at this thing and say, ‘Hey, what is this election about?’ We’ve always heard right versus left. I think at this point it’s right versus wrong,” Whatley added.
